Happy Fourth of July!
Friday

The goal of the Festival is to strengthen and preserve these traditions by presenting them on the National Mall. This year the festival features Columbia, the Peace Corps, and Rhythm and Blues. Evening concerts, food concessions, and a marketplace are part of the festival.

Saturday
Grillfish Bayfest–Saturday, 11:30am – 4:00pm, Grillfish at 1200 New Hampshire Ave: Grillfish celebrates the bounty of the chesapeak with a patio party featuring oysters on the half shell, oyster po’boys and soft shell sandwiches. Local liquids include DC Brau brews and Old Bay Bloody Marys.
Sunday
A Capitol Fourth Rehearsal–Sunday, 8:00pm, West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol: Rehearsal is free and open to the public.
Waves at Matsushima–Now through July 5, Arthur M. Sackler Gallery: Matsushima is renowned for its sheltered bay dotted with more than 260 picturesque islands covered with pine trees. Artists, poets, pilgrims, and tourists have long traveled to the northern end of Miyagi Prefecture to be inspired by the area’s natural beauty and to visit the Buddhist temple complex Zuiganji. Remarkably, the temple and much of the surrounding landscape survived the earthquake and tsunami that struck the Pacific coast of Japan. Images of Matsushima from the Freer Gallery’s collection—a pair of seventeenth-century folding screens by Tawaraya Sōtatsu and woodblock prints by Kawase Hasui—record a national treasure that narrowly escaped total destruction.
Monday
A Capitol Fourth–Monday, 8:00pm (gates open at 3:00pm), West Lawn of U.S. Capitol: America’s national Independence Day celebration will be hosted by Emmy- and Golden Globe Award–winning actor Jimmy Smits, and will feature unrivaled performances from some of the country’s biggest musical names–including Grammy- and Emmy Award–winning actor and musician Steve Martin with the Steep Canyon Rangers, multi-platinum recording superstar Josh Groban, Tony-, Emmy-, and Golden Globe–nominated star of stage and screen Matthew Morrison (Glee), American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, rock ‘n’ roll legend Little Richard performing with the cast of the Broadway smash hit Million Dollar Quartet, and three-time Tony-nominated Broadway star Kelli O’Hara–all joined by the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly.
