I loved the book growing up… Make Way for Ducklings, by Robert McCloskey, so when I moved to Boston for work after college, I was enthralled with the bronze statues that paid tribute to the childhood favorite. Several years ago, I took my sons to my old stomping grounds in Boston on our way to go camping through the Canadian Maritimes. The duckling statues are in the Public Gardens which were right across Boylston Street from where my office was. My sons begrudgingly accommodated their sappy mom and let me take this picture of them.
I felt that same inner smile the other morning as I drove by the Centreville Volunteer Fire Department. A family of geese–mom, dad, and a handful of fuzzy goslings–started to step on to Old Centreville Road. Cars in both directions stopped to let the family waddle from the IHOP parking lot to the Fire Department. I was too far back to get a shot of them walking across the street, but I did get a picture of them once they reached safety. In an area where drivers are often in a hurry, this family of geese accomplished more than many stop signs do!
